Brief Introduction For Xiangshan



Xiangshan County is located at the south edge of the Changjiang Delta.  In the middle of the Zhejiang Province coastline, this peninsula is sandwiched between Xiangshan Bay and Shanmen Bay.  Xiangshan was registered in 706 AC, the name was given after a mountain looks like a crouching elephant.  The county is consist of 1 peninsula and 608 islands covering 6,510 square kilometers distributed by 1,175 square meters inland and 5,335 square meters ocean.  It lasts 90 kilometers long from south to north and 70 kilometers wide from east to west.  The coastline is 800 kilometers, one eighth of the whole Zhejiang province coastline.  Xiangshan is praised as the Ocean & Mountain Paradise and Natural Oxygen Bar because of its natural beauty and unspoiled wildness.  By the north, Xiangshan Bay is an excellent deep-water harbor never frozen, number of big tonnage berths can be built there.  In South, Shipu Bay has 18 kilometers long coastline, is one of the six grade A fishing ports in China.  It is a secondary foreign trading port as well, mooring thousands of fishing boats.  The population of Xiangshan is 533,000, with 156,000 in metropolis of 16.7 square kilometers.

In archaeological studies, the ancestors started fishing in Xiangshan 6,000 years ago, cultivated the brilliant “Mt. Pagoda Culture”.  The relics of defense architecture from the beginning of Ming Dynasty in Changguo, Juexi, and Qianchan to the end of Ming Dynastry in Zhanghuangyan leave Xiangshan with the precious coastal defense culture.  For thousands of years, Xiangshan fish men have lived with the ocean, created a long history of fishing culture.  Currently, there are 3 cultural relics listed by the Province and 34 by the City.  Shipu is listed as a historical culture site in China.

In recent years, the people of Xiangshan have been promoting and experiencing the Xiangshan spirit “The Ocean, embracing the hundreds of rivers; The People, standing on the top of the waves”.  Due to the stead growing economy, Xiangshan has ascended to the top 100 counties in China for 5 consecutive years for its overall performances, it was ranked 63rd in 2005.  It was honored as a model county in China, as well as the textile town and the architecture villa.  Xiangshan is also famous for its coastal resort and sea fishes.  Two local companies successfully went public.  In 2005, Xiangshan reached GDP 16.06 billions in RMB, fiscal income 1.77 billions in RMB, the average disposable income per capita 16,969 in RMB, and the average net income per capita for farmers and fish men 7,736 in RMB.
